Further Information on: 23rd Morland Folk Dance Week

August 9th to 16th 2008

What's it all about?

Our philosophy is based on the belief that our dances, old and new, are a priceless inheritance and that our pleasure in dancing them is enhanced immeasurably when we dance them well, concentrating on embodying the music and without the need for constant calling. We aim to give dancers the opportunity to dance the final turns of each dance unassisted by the caller.

The pattern of the week will be much as it has been in recent years, using Morland Village Hall as our main base. You the customers have shown great enthusiasm for the additional workshop sessions, so they will certainly continue.

Staff

Cumbrian Gap will be joined by Dave Yeomans and Victoria Close (aka DeoVolente) to provide the music and the musicians’ workshops. They have danced with us for years and it will be great to have them on the staff.  This year we are delighted to welcome back David and Kathryn Wright to share the calling and the callers’ workshops with Ian. We hope other experienced callers will take the chance of calling some, or all, of a session. Please let us know if you are interested.

Timetable

The week begins with Saturday dinner at 6.15 in the Village Hall, followed by dancing from about 7.30. Sessions then follow every morning, afternoon and evening (except Wednesday, when it will be evening only).

Each day will begin with a session looking at dance technique, aiming at a high standard of steps and style according to the period of the dance, with a minimum of calling.

After coffee there will be a callers’ workshop run by Ian, David or Kathryn, and dancers will be able to choose from a variety of sessions covering traditional, composed, ritual and social dances.

After lunch, experienced callers will have the opportunity to call for dancing to music from one of the bands while the other band is running a musicians’ session. Let us know if you would like to play in these sessions. Music will be suggested nearer the time and there will be opportunities to play for dancing in the later part of the week.

In the final session of the daytime it is hoped that callers from the morning workshop will call the dances they have prepared, and that they and the dancers will be able to discuss the outcome.

After dinner, we will ‘let our hair down’ in the evening dance.

Workshops

At the Morland week we are very keen to reflect and retain the diversity of activities which is such an important characteristic of the English folk dancing scene.  We hope very much that everyone will want to try a range of activities.  Workshops are likely - depending on interest - to include most or all of the following:

  • Calling
  • Playing (different instruments)
  • Morris
  • Long Sword
  • Rapper Sword
  • Traditional
  • Playford style
  • American
  • Singing in harmony

Other sessions may be arranged depending on demand.

Accommodation

We have a caravan and camp site with showers, washhouse, WC, electric hook-ups and Elsan disposal point. This is available throughout the season and you are welcome to extend your stay before or after the Folk Dance Week.

For those who prefer the luxury of bed-and-breakfast, we have a limited number of places in or near Morland where this can be arranged at a price of £18.00 per head per night. When we run out of these, or if you prefer more luxury, there are holiday cottages, other B&Bs and various small hotels in the area. I will gladly send you a list of these on request.

Meals

Meals in the Village Hall will again be provided by Jackie Kirkpatrick and her team from Eden Valley Catering. Light lunches cost £4.30, and the 3-course Dinners cost £9.40. You can't get better value than that!
